Admit it, you missed me!

I mean, I hope you missed me. I don’t mean to be vain or anything, but I hope what we are doing at LOT matters to you. Despite the lack of communication, we’ve moved forward on a number of fronts. Really, everything is okay. This is a quick update.

Organization: We officially exist! The LOT Foundation was established in May. Since then we set up a bank account and put some money in it. In the third quarter we’ll start spending cash to further our mission, which is to help individuals, families, households and friends steadily reduce their carbon footprint and to actively participate in the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The two projects described below comprise our primary activities.

Carbon Accounting System: Ultimately, the needs of regular people lead to the release of carbon dioxide. Individual people can take steps to reduce that carbon footprint, and influence companies and governments to help. It all starts with awareness, and our consumer carbon accounting system will make it easy for each of us to understand our carbon footprint. It will also help each of us take steps to reduce our carbon consumption and measure improvement over time. We will spend the next 3 months building and publishing the first phase of the system and an accompanying web app.

Biomass Sequestration: We hope to prevent the creation of more than 150,000 tons of CO2 by the end of 2023 by preserving 100,000 tons of waste wood in underground wood vaults. We’ve settled on northeast Utah for our initial project zone, where national forests and private lands produce plenty of unmerchantable wood. Most of it falls on the forest floor and remains there until it burns in wildfires. Wood vaults are an excellent solution to both accumulated carbon dioxide and uncontrolled wildfires.

In the blog I’ll be keeping you updated on both of these initiatives, but I’ll also be getting back to the basics, which intends to help regular people take steps to be part of the carbon solution rather than part of the carbon problem. I know we can do it!
