Data Science Team

We organized our data science team last week. We are now officially building steam, with projects and accountability and goals and everything! In the next few weeks we’ll build out similar volunteer teams in other functional areas.

The most urgent objective for the data science team is to design and build a minimum viable carbon accounting system. Though our minimum viable product (“mvp”) goal is simplicity, we need to draw upon non-trivial understanding of a remarkably broad set of skills, including database design and engineering, accounting, apps development, chemistry. Each of us are testing the waters outside of our immediate areas of expertise. Like it or not, this is the way of the world when it comes to LOT.

In the next carbon accounting product our data science team will depend more heavily on predictive analytics, especially natural language processing, image recognition, and more standard machine learning techniques like classification and regression. In anticipation, we will immediately start working on techniques we anticipate will be most useful. We are in the unusual and enviable position driving definition to problems and finding the solutions. The team are highly skilled, competent, dedicated, and focused on the LOT mission.

We continue to work on collecting people with other areas of expertise, to work on other activities, and to push the LOT mission forward. We need financial services professionals to help us understand carbon offset markets and how to best account for our new carbon currency; we need a group of people to organize all aspects of a carbon sequestration project scheduled for summer 2022; we need volunteers in forestry, law, real estate, experience design, data management, partnerships, and public relations. The primary qualification, however, is a belief that individuals believe in the LOT mission. Join us!
